Joel Ordway is a 24 year member of the Steuben County Sheriff's Office, having being hired by former Sheriff Jack Lisi. Joel’s Dad, Joe Ordway, served as the Undersheriff of Steuben County for many years. From 1980 to 1983, Joel served in the United States Marine Corp and from 1983 to 1984 he was a security officer at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in San Clemente, Ca.
Ordway began his career in the Sheriff’s Office as a correction officer. He later became a road patrol officer, a K-9 Officer, and was promoted to the criminal investigation unit in 1992. In 1997, Joel was promoted to Steuben County's first Chief Deputy, a position he held until 2008, when he was elected as Sheriff. Sheriff Ordway is a former President of the Canisteo-Greenwood BOE and former coach and President of the Canisteo wrestling club. He has served as the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy's Session Director in 1989 and currently is a member of the Law Enforcement Training Directors Association of New York State (LETDANYS).
Sheriff Ordway has been married for 22 years to his wife, Linda, and they reside with their children, Joseph and Hali, in Canisteo, NY.
Steuben County has a population of 99,000 and is over 14,000 square miles -which is larger than the State of Rhode Island.
