Sheriff Tweddell has served as Sheriff of Steuben County since 1999 following two years as Undersheriff. Since starting his law enforcement career with the New York State Police in 1965, he has received extensive training in all aspects of law enforcement, including hostage negotiations, police supervision, counter-terrorism, and the conduct of extended and intensive investigations in organized crime and high-level drug operations. He supervised the State Police Investigative Unit in Steuben County. Many new and innovative operations and procedures have been established in the Sheriff’s Office since he took over as Steuben County’s chief law enforcement officer. In 2003, Sheriff Tweddell was elected to and serves on the National Sheriffs’ Association’s Board of Directors. He also serves as Second Vice-President of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association. Steuben County has a population of 98,726 and encompasses 1,409 square miles.
