Harry Buffardi is a 34 year veteran of the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Buffardi is currently in his third term as Schenectady County Sheriff. He has served on every level within the office, including eight years as Undersheriff. For a four year period, he was assigned to the Capital District Drug Enforcement Task Force where he served as a team leader. In 1975, he became the first full service K-9 dog handler in upstate New York. In 1999, he was selected as Advisory Board Member of the Municipal Police Training Academy for Zone 5 and in 2001, was elected Chairman of the Schenectady County Traffic Safety Board. That same year, Sheriff Buffardi was commissioned by the NYS Sheriffs’ Association to help set-up and command the cadaver dog K-9 teams at the Freshkill Landfill on Staten Island, which was a crime scene site for the 9-11 World Trade Center disaster. The Sheriff has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from SUNY Empire State College and a Master’s Degree in Social Science from Syracuse University. He serves as an adjunct professor at Schenectady County Community College in its criminal justice program and lectures at numerous colleges and universities. Sheriff Buffardi personally trained and handles two full service police K-9s and is also involved in K-9 training for several Sheriffs Offices and Police Departments.
