Ron Cary joined the Sheriff’s Office in 1977, after graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from the State University College of Buffalo. This followed an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Mohawk Valley Community College. In May of 2001, Cary received his Masters Degree in Public Administration from Marist College. In 1981, Cary was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Six years later, he was appointed Lieutenant in charge of administering all aspects of the operation of the Madison County Jail. In addition, he worked part-time as a Police Officer for Chittenango Police Department. Before becoming Sheriff, Cary was very active in the New York State Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, serving as an officer of that group. He presently serves as Chairman of the Sheriffs’ Association’s Jail Management Committee. He serves on the Advisory Board of the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) and also serves on two committees of the National Sheriffs’ Association, the Indian Affairs Committee and the Youth Programs & Juvenile Justice Committee.
Madison County has a population of 69,441 and an area of 661 square miles.
