Sheriff Allen Riley is a life long resident of Madison County. He has 27 years of experience of law enforcement with the New York State Police. Sheriff Riley was accepted into the New York State Police Academy in 1982. In 1984, he was selected to be a K-9 handler. He has handled both narcotics and explosive detection dogs, during his 18 years as a K-9 handler. He has worked on details such as the World Trade Center attack, Sarah Ann Wood detail, State Fair details and numerous search and rescue details. In 2003, he was promoted to the Criminal Investigation Unit. Sheriff Riley retired from the State Police in September 2009 to run in a special November 2009, election for Sheriff.  As a member of the State Police, Sheriff Riley served as a Criminal Investigator, Gaming Unit Investigator, and a Uniformed Trooper.  He has received training in evidence handling, DNA collection, interrogation & interview, casino due diligence, anthrax training, clandestine labs, domestic violence, sexual harassment, hostage/critical incident command, hazardous materials, U.S. Customs narcotics officer - cross designation.
Sheriff Riley resides in southern Madison County with his wife and two daughters. They own and operate a 110 acre pasture based beef operation.
