You could hear the muffled rumble of a large bus moving along East Bluff Drive heading for the Sheriffs’ Camp
Though it was probably five minutes away from delivering the first busload of campers, the counselors were all assembled at the camp’s staging area. Counselors on the buses had already assigned the kids their cabin numbers and as they get off the bus, the counselors they will be living with for the next week greet them.
As the bus pulled into the staging area the voices on the bus seem
too hush as they took in the Sheriffs’ Camp. One could feel the anxiety
on the bus. Moments later, there were kids, counselors and luggage
everywhere.
To
the casual observer, it looked like organized chaos. To Camp Director
Dave Sherman, standing on a hill overlooking the staging area the
welcoming and the organizing of the campers was going like clock work.
Not once did the Camp Director, who has been in that position for 23
years, reach for his walkie-talkie to give instructions to his senior
counselors. He didn’t need to, the staff was well trained and
experienced. Moments later, the second bus of the 2008 camp season
pulled into the staging area. The casual observer might now call the
scene total chaos. But still the smiling camp director keenly watched
and never had a need to reach for his walkie-talkie.
It wasn’t long until the campers had moved into their cabins and were
traveling around the camp in organized groups of 10 in as many groups
as cabins.
Sunday, which is arrival day, is busy as the kids have to take swimming
tests, visit the nurse, sign up for recreational classes they’ll enjoy
all week and get orientated to camp life.
