Christopher J. Moss joined the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office in 1989 as a Special Deputy. Later that year he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Sheriff and served in that position until 1994 when he was promoted to Investigator. While assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) Sheriff Moss attained the rank of Sergeant. He left CID to become a Lieutenant in the Road Patrol Division in 2001. In May of 2005, Sheriff Moss was transferred back to CID where he became the Division Commander. In 2005, Sheriff Moss was elected to a four year term, replacing retired Sheriff Charles D.W. Houper. Prior to being elected, Sheriff Moss also served on the agency’s Special Services Unit, Honor Guard, was president of the Chemung County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association and was previously a New York State certified K-9 handler. Sheriff Moss possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services from SUNY Empire and is also a graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy, Session 200.
Since being elected Sheriff in 2005, Sheriff Moss has assisted in guiding the agency through the accreditation process for both the Police Services Division and the County Jail. Sheriff Moss has also implemented new public service programs, to include methamphetamine awareness, senior citizen safety, Crime Watch and Prevention Newsletters and boater and snowmobile safety courses.
Sheriff Moss also serves as the Chairman of the Chemung County Traffic Safety Board, as well as the President of the Chemung County Family Services Executive Board. In his spare time, Sheriff Moss enjoys spending time with his family, as well as hunting and fishing.
Chemung County has an estimated population of 91,070, and an area of 412 square miles.
