William Tompkins was elected Sheriff in November of 2006 and took office January 1, 2007. Tompkins was born and raised in Allegany County. He began his law enforcement career in 1979 as a part-time corrections officer with the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office. In 1980, Tompkins was hired as a Deputy Sheriff by the Juab County Sheriff’s Office in Utah where he worked from 1980 to 1983 and again from 1991 to 1996. He attended the Utah State Police Academy in 1981 and was assigned to patrol, eventually being appointed to Detective and later, commander of a multi-agency narcotics unit. Tompkins also worked for Greenacres City Public Safety Department, Palm Beach County, Florida for four years as a Patrolman, was cross-trained as a firefighter, and was promoted to the Detective Division where he served as a Burglary Detective and as an Agent with the Palm Beach County Organized Crime Bureau. In 1997, Tompkins returned home to Allegany County where he taught Criminal Justice at the BOCES Career and Technical Education Center, Belmont, New York until being elected Sheriff. Sheriff Tompkins is honored to have the opportunity to serve the citizens of Allegany County and looks forward to contributing to the positive promotion of the Office of Sheriff in New York State. Allegany County has a population of 50,602 and an area of 1,030 square miles.
